Description
The tissue will be evaluated by a boarded pathologist with a special interest in hepatic disease. A full written biopsy report will be provided, including source, history, description of submitted tissue, microscopic description, and diagnosis where possible. Trichrome, rhodanine, and reticulum staining and interpretation are included. The report will include the staging of fibrosis, evaluation of the degree of parenchymal collapse, and a qualitative copper grade. Internal pathologist to pathologist opinions is available where needed. There is an option for further discussion with an internal medicine consultant with a special interest in hepatic disease.
Tri-iodothyronine is included in some thyroid panels, but T3 alone is an unreliable indicator of thyroid status in dogs and cats. This is because the primary thyroid hormone secreted by the thyroid gland is T4. This test is also used as part of the T3 suppression test in cats.

Serum in red top or serum separator
Specimen
0.5 mL serum
Description
Used to assess the presence of autoimmune thyroid disease. This test is less sensitive to autoimmune thyroid disease than the thyroglobulin autoantibody (TGAA) test. The presence of T3 autoantibody does not indicate hypothyroidism, nor does the presence of autoantibody predict the future development of hypothyroidism. This test is canine-specific.

A baseline pre T3/T4 serum sample is obtained, after which T3 is administered every 8 hours for two days. Four hours after the administration of the seventh dose of T3 on the morning of the third day, the post blood sample is drawn. The pre and post serum samples are then submitted for evaluation.
